Can’t get to a gym right now? Don’t sweat it! (Get it? Ha!)

The good news is: getting fit from the comfort of your own home IS possible. In fact, on my first ever fitness journey back in 2006, I didn’t join a gym and did workout videos from the comfort of my own home, losing 25 kg in conjunction with a good diet and movement throughout the day.

This time around, I’m doing the same thing.

I’m not using a gym at all.  I do all my workouts in the privacy of my own home.

And they work!  Just over two weeks today, I’m already noticing a difference in my fitness levels and body shape.

Admittedly, for the most part I use YouTube these days to source great workouts but there are drawbacks to this platform too. If your internet connection is a little slow, working out online can be a nightmare.

And there’s nothing worse than being in the “Zone” only to get interrupted by a random ad break halfway through your workout.

I’m making a sneaky prediction.   Workout DVDs are TOTALLY the Comeback Queens of 2021

All you need is a good set of running shoes, a good sports bra, and a DVD player and you are ready to rock!

In that spirit, this afternoon I pulled out my old workout DVD collection and dusted them off (I may have had a slight addiction to workout DVDs lol). In today’s post, I thought I’d share my most tried and true titles with you, personally guaranteed to get your heart rate up and burn out your muscles so you can get strong and lean – all without leaving the house.

#1: Tae Bo Cardio – Billy Blanks

Listen, this DVD will get you results – I mean it. The workouts aren’t super long, I think they’re about 45 minutes each, but trust me, you don’t need any more than that.

You will be dripping buckets of sweat by the end (if you make it all the way through, I didn’t for weeks).

But it’s more than that. There’s something about kickboxing that helps release pent up rage and feels empowering – by the end of a Tae Bo workout I feel so proud of myself in more ways than one.

Back in the day, I credited this DVD as doing a lot of the heavy lifting in helping me lose 25 kg (at least when it comes to exercise) … maybe it’s time to dust it off and try it again?

#2: Carmen Electra’s Fit to Strip Box Set

The ultimate 00s nostalgia series!

In my early fitness days I alternated Carmen Electra’s Fit to Strip DVD with Tae Bo (above). This workout series is so cheeky and fun, it doesn’t feel like a workout – until the next day. It’s another workout that feels empowering and good to do.

Volume 2 was my particular favourite. It’s a series of bodyweight exercises designed to strengthen and firm your body in all the right places and create strong curves.

#3: MTV Yoga

Hands down just the best yoga class I’ve ever done – and I’ve done a LOT of yoga classes. First you build up a sweat, then you work your balance, posture and strength before winding down with THE most relaxing stretch sequence ever for a complete mind-body experience.

It’s challenging but it’s still accessible for beginners with modified postures for every fitness level.  If you’re going to pick a go-to yoga video, make it this one.

It’s led by Kristen McGee with an absolutely KILLER soundtrack to move to. I’ll put the link for it here but be quick.  Availability is sporadic on Amazon.

#4: Envy Girls Workout

If you’re new to moderate beginner level in resistance training, this workout is great. It’s a two DVD set consisting of 4 workouts, each targeting specific areas: arms, legs, butt and abs. Each workout goes for about 20 minutes – or if you’re crunched for time, you can do the express versions, which are only 5 minutes each.

All you need is a pair of light dumbbells and you’re good to go. Listen, it’s not P90X, so advanced exercisers may need to do them twice through to feel the burn but if you’re just starting, or even if you’re at intermediate level, I guarantee you’ll be sweating and sore by the end.

#5: QuickFix Total Toning DVD

I love the QuickFix DVDs, so you’ll see a fair few of them coming up in this list. The QuickFix Total Body workout consists of three distinct workouts.  You can do them all together for a 30 minute workout, or if you’re short on time you can do just one 10 minute segment.

Each segment has a different focus and is led by a different instructor (one of whom I for some reason remember being Denise Austin, and that’s where I first heard of her but turns out – no, it’s the wonderful Minna Lessig. Tripper.)

It’s a great workout, and was one of my favourites for all around body toning and cardio, especially if I wanted a bit of light hearted movement. The great thing about it being in 10 minute segments is you can fully customise your workout – you can do one, two or all three segments in any different sequence you like.

The instructions feel easy to follow and the movements feel accessible even if you’re new to exercising, but it still feels challenging enough to give you a good workout. One of my all time faves.

#6: Quickfix Total Cardio Kick

If Tae Bo feels a little too intense for you right now, another great option is the QuickFix Total Cardio Kick DVD.

Like the other Quickfix DVDs, this one has 3 x 10 minute segments.  Each segment focuses on different areas: legs, abs, and arms while at the same time working your cardio.

It’s still quite a challenging cardio workout for all fitness levels.  However, where Tae Bo better suits an intermediate-advanced level, this workout is an introductory/beginner friendly kickboxing version.  You can start with one 10 minute segment and follow the beginner modifications, then add a second segment as your exercise tolerance improves.

This is still one of my favourites to put on if I’m after that sweaty kickboxing glow. Another thing I love about the QuickFix series is how easy they are to follow.  You don’t feel overwhelmed or like you can’t keep up with the movements.

But don’t let that fool you into thinking this workout is just for beginners!  It’s great for anyone looking to get their heart rates up and strengthen their entire bodies.

#7: Element AM and PM Yoga for Beginners

This is one of my favourite yoga workouts when I’m chasing a sequence that’s restorative and simple. The AM workout stretches and energises your body without vigorous movement, welcoming in the day with calm and focus.

The PM sequence is my especial favourite.

It stretches and relaxes your body and quiets your mind.  It prepares you for a relaxing night’s sleep. Great to do to before bed with a candle and oil diffuser going.

#8: Kim Kardashian’s Fit In Your Jeans by Friday Workout Collection

Okay, so the name is a little dubious, and I’m not entirely sure we can credit these workouts with KKW’s glorious derriere but listen: this DVD series will definitely get you working hard.

It’s led by instructor Jennifer Galardi, who has her own yoga channel and has released a bunch of other workout videos.

If you’re any kind of a Kardashian fan like me you need these DVDs in your collection. It’s vintage Kim at her finest – and the workouts are simple but incredibly effective.

#9: Jane Fonda’s Original Workout

Look I have to put this here because the classics never die.

I remember doing Jane Fonda workouts with mum in the early 90s when I was little.

I had the leg warmers and these tiny little Reeboks and I just thought it was the best. (Honestly? I still do.)

30+ years later these workouts still stand the test of time. I have been doing 80s aerobics videos like Jane Fonda’s almost daily.  They are already making a tremendous difference in my endurance, strength and mobility. You have to try it – I promise it will hook you in.

#10: Leslie Sansone’s Walking Off the Pounds

Can you lose weight just from walking?  Yes!  You ABSOLUTELY can!

And you don’t even have to leave your house.

I know that walking on the spot in your own living room sounds a little … odd but honestly? This workout REALLY works.

If you’re looking for some LISS to pair with your high intensity cardio or strength training, look no further than these workouts – they’re incredible.

Through a series of simple moves (it’s not just walking on the spot), these workouts get your heart rate in a target aerobic zone and hold it there. Leslie Sansone, the instructor, is such a delight to watch too.  She’s always complimenting her other dancers and cracking jokes.

If you’re new to aerobics, or find a lot of the choreography in aerobics difficult to follow, these workouts are especially great!  The movements are easy to follow, and gradually introduced, so you can follow along with confidence.

Plus: it works!  If for whatever reason you can’t go for a walk outside, just put on one of these DVDs to enjoy the same great benefits as a walk in the park … and then some!

Conclusion

If you can get to a gym, and you love going to the gym – great. If you prefer to work home – that’s wonderful too! You can still get in a great workout – and best of all, you don’t have to motivate yourself to leave the house, or work out in a mask.

In the privacy of your own home, all you have to do is put a DVD into the machine, hit play, and you’re well on your way to the healthy, fit body and life of your dreams.
